First, take a deep breath and relax. Keeping calm will be key to getting your car out of traffic. Panicking won’t get you anywhere but into the back of an ambulance–or worse. Evaluate your situation–how many cars are around you, how many lanes to the side of the road, etc.
Next, give the brakes another shot. Many vehicles are equipped with a dual braking system so stopping should still be possible. If the vehicle doesn’t slow when you put iphone stopped responding strong, consistent pressure on the brake pedal, both systems have failed, in which case you’ll want to leave the engine running.
If you don’t have any brakes, you need to be able to get to the side of the road. Cutting power to the engine by turning the key off will slow the vehicle but it will also making steering more difficult. Turning off the vehicle cuts your power steering as well. Leave it on until you’re safely out of traffic and coasting to a stop.
