Solar-powered electric vehicles are well on their way as Audi takes the first step in implementing small solar panels in vehicle designs.
What’s to come
German automakers may be known for performance models, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t looking for new forms of sustainable mobility. While competitors are swearing off gasoline by a certain year, Audi is stepping up to provide a potential solution here and now.
Solar-powered electric vehicles will allow drivers to travel further without stopping. Audi plans to make that vision a reality by implementing small, thin film solar cells in a vehicle’s panoramic roof. In the future, the majority of the roof would be covered in the cells.
The solar energy will flow into the car’s electrical system. That power would be able to offer a supplemental supply to comfort features, such as heated seats and air conditioning.
While it may seem too good to be true, Audi has already confirmed that the cells work well in both high-temperate and low-light scenarios.
We here at Gossett Audi can’t wait to see what the future holds for electric vehicles!
